Applicants for the BC-TMH credential must meet the following requirements:

A Qualifying License or NCC

There are TWO ways candidates can meet this requirement.

• Hold a current, active qualifying license to practice in a behavioral health field in the state or country in which you reside or work. If you are currently working as an associate/intern or under supervised practice, you also qualify as long as you are complying with your practice limitations.
• Hold a current, active National Certified Counselor (NCC) certification.

A copy of your license or NCC number will be required for application.

Training

Prior to submitting the BC-TMH application, you must successfully complete an approved telemental health training course. Please refer to our Required Training for the approved trainers and more information.

Comprehensive Final Examination

A passing score on the TeleMental Health Examination (TMHE) is required in order to earn the BC-TMH certification. You will be authorized to take the examination after your application is approved.

If you enrolled in the approved TeleMental Health Professional Training Series prior to 2020 through the CCE learning management system, the TMHE was also included. Please submit the final exam certificate with your BC-TMH application.

The TMHE measures a professional’s ability to apply and evaluate knowledge in core telemental health best practices necessary to practice safely and competently as an entry-level telemental health provider. The TMHE represents six content areas, and their corresponding skill and knowledge areas, approved by the TMHE Subject Matter Expert (SME) Committee in April 2023. View the content outline here.

The TMHE consists of 120 multiple-choice questions. Examinees will have 3 hours to complete the examination, which must be completed in one sitting.

In the event that an individual does not pass the TMHE, they may retake it twice. Individuals must wait at least 90 days after taking the examinantion before requesting to retest. The fee to retest is $100. To retest, an individual may access their application in the Credentialing Gateway after the 90-day waiting period.

If an individual does not pass the TMHE after three attempts their application closes. A new application for the BC-TMH credential is then required in order to be authorized to sit for the TMHE again. With each new application, three examination attempts are permitted, following the 90-day minimum waiting period after each examination attempt. Applicants must disclose any criminal, legal, or disciplinary related matters when applying for this credential. A disclosure and all required documentation must be submitted with your application. Reviews of required disclosed matters are processed in accordance with current CCE policies and procedures, including the CCE Credential Eligibility Ethics Policy.

Application Fees

A nonrefundable, nontransferable application fee of $150 is due at the time of application. Your application will be held open for 3 years to allow you to submit all required materials.
